The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) and CAF –Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean– are convening the high-level meeting “Gas Integration in MERCOSUR + Chile: Toward a Regional Market,” to be held on May 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hilton São Paulo Morumbi. Following the institutional opening, the day will unfold across four panels bringing together the region’s leading energy sector stakeholders.
The meeting marks the close of Phase V of the Regional Gas Integration Project for the MERCOSUR countries and Chile, in which OLACDE and CAF, together with representatives from government, the private sector and regulatory bodies, will carry out a comparative assessment of different infrastructure and regulatory alternatives to expand regional natural gas trade. The analysis considers the performance of the transport system under different expansion scenarios and its economic impact and implications for energy security for the MERCOSUR countries and Chile.
The four panels will address the link between gas, energy security and the global geopolitical context within the framework of regional integration; the regulatory changes underway to move toward a deeper regional market; the structure of the value chain and the distribution of risks associated with trade between countries; and the role of Brazilian demand in consolidating a regional natural gas market.
