The advisor to the Executive Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), Medardo Cadena, participated in the 30th MEM Energy Congress, held in Cartagena, Colombia, where he presented the main challenges of energy security and the development of sustainable projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.
During his remarks, Cadena emphasized that guaranteeing the electricity supply goes beyond technical matters, constituting a strategic and political decision that directly impacts the economy and social well-being of the region’s countries.
Among the highlights of his presentation, he stressed the importance of:
• Diversifying sources and strengthening energy planning to ensure security and reduce costs.
• Promoting flexible regulatory frameworks that facilitate the incorporation of new technologies and benefit users.
• Moving toward integrated electricity markets that leverage the complementarity between hydroelectric, solar, wind and emerging technology sources, ensuring supply, efficiency and system operability.
He also highlighted Colombia’s potential as a regional benchmark and pivotal hub for energy integration, thanks to its wealth of water resources, its growing participation in renewable energy and its specialized human capital.
