The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) and the Empresa Eléctrica Quito S.A, through their highest authorities, Alfonso Blanco Bonilla and Jaime Bucheli Albán, respectively, signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement to develop a study to implement a Sustainable Project for the Generation of Non-Fossil Energy from solid urban waste of the Metropolitan District of Quito. This event was held on the afternoon of August 20, 2020 at the Organization’s headquarters in Quito-Ecuador.
“We are working on carrying out a project to evaluate the possibility of the use of urban solid waste, and try to solve a problem that exists in all the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean, not only in the city of Quito” . With this introduction, the Executive Secretary of OLACDE, Alfonso Blanco, began by expressing how pleased the Organization is with this initiative, which has the ability to project to the rest of the cities in the region what can be done by harnessing energy from solid urban waste, and the important path that is already being traveled for sustainable development for the entire region.
The General Manager of the Empresa Eléctrica Quito S.A, Jaime Bucheli Albán, pointed out that if the study determines that the project is feasible for the elimination of garbage and leachate, it will allow the Metropolitan District of Quito to be positioned as a leader in the use of waste in Ecuador and will also allow the Company to generate electricity with the most abundant renewable resource on the planet such as biomass, contributing to the environment and people’s health.
This act between both Institutions that was carried out in the facilities of the Organization’s headquarters, followed all biosafety measures and a strict protocol that The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization has implemented, in order to protect the health of its users.
