Latin America and the Caribbean are moving toward smarter, more sustainable, and more resilient energy systems, where battery storage is becoming established as a key enabler for integrating renewable energy, reducing emissions, and transforming national energy matrices.
In this context, the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), in collaboration with the Central American Integration System (SICA) and with sponsorship from Huawei, held the II Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Seminar on June 16 and 17 in Panama City. The event brought together experts, authorities, and private sector representatives to discuss the technical, regulatory, and cooperation challenges the region faces in this area.
During the sessions, key topics were addressed, including regulatory models for BESS, safety standards, grid-forming technologies, smart grids, and pilot experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean. The discussions highlighted that energy storage is fundamental to accelerating decarbonization and modernizing regional electrical systems, while also strengthening national technical capabilities.
The seminar also delved into the design of energy communication networks for the next decade, the use of a single optical fiber for multiple services, and the development of smart substations as essential elements for operating complex systems. In addition, it explored the strategic role of transmission and transformation networks in the digitalization of the electrical system, as well as the use of optical technologies and predictive tools to improve their reliability and operational sustainability.
The technical sessions included the exchange of international standards, global success stories, and technological advances with direct application in the region, driving scalable solutions adapted to the Latin American context.
The gathering concluded with the presentation of the main results to OLACDE’s LXIII Board of Experts, reaffirming the commitment of member countries to an energy transition based on innovation, technical integration, and regional cooperation.
