The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) held the technical workshop “Electricity Transmission in Latin America and the Caribbean: Modernization and Resilience of Electrical Grids”, aimed at fostering the exchange of experiences and knowledge on the main advances, challenges and opportunities in developing modern, efficient and sustainable electrical grids in the region.
This technical space focused on the importance of having resilient and digitalized electrical infrastructure capable of meeting the challenges of the energy transition with a vision of regional integration, operational efficiency and supply security.
During his remarks, Fitzgerald Cantero Piali, Director of Studies, Projects and Information at OLACDE, stated:
“Sometimes it takes a blackout to understand what energy means. Grids must be modern, interconnected and stable to meet the needs of our countries.”
Cantero emphasized the need to strengthen international cooperation and plan grids as strategic infrastructure for future energy development.
Lin Hongyu, GEIDCO’s Director General of Cooperation, noted: “Next-generation grids must integrate smart technologies, improve climate resilience and connect production and consumption in a dynamic and decentralized way.”
GEIDCO proposed an international cooperation platform to boost robust electrical infrastructure, expand renewable generation and accelerate the transition toward sustainable energy systems in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The workshop also included a specialized panel on electrical integration and grid resilience in the region, moderated by Fitzgerald Cantero Piali. Paulina Pazmiño, President of CIEEPI, and Gonzalo Uquillas, representative of CEDE-Ecuador, took part, addressing the Ecuadorian case as an example of the technical and regulatory challenges in electricity transmission.
With this initiative, OLACDE reaffirms its commitment to the modernization of the regional electricity sector, promoting secure, interconnected grids prepared for the challenges of a 21st-century energy system.
