The Executive Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), Andrés Rebolledo, took part in the seminar “Challenges and Solutions for Regional Gas Integration”, organized by Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, where he highlighted the role of natural gas in the energy integration of the Southern Cone.
During his remarks, Rebolledo pointed out that “over the last decade, natural gas trade in the region grew by 58%. 75% of consumption comes from regional production, demonstrating a solid base of self-sufficiency that drives energy security, integration, and a low-emissions transition.”
He also noted that even under carbon-neutrality scenarios for 2050, natural gas will continue to account for 20% of the regional energy matrix. In this context, he announced that OLACDE and CAF are promoting investments, infrastructure studies, and tools such as the Methane Observatory to move toward decarbonized production.
For his part, Guido Maiulini, Head of Strategic Advisory at OLACDE, also took part in the event and emphasized the strategic value of natural gas in improving electricity reliability and regional competitiveness. “The reliability of electricity systems also depends on stronger gas integration. If we move forward with pragmatism and cooperation, the entire region can benefit. What often holds back integration is how collective rents are distributed. That barrier needs to be overcome,” he said.
OLACDE, with support from CAF, is driving a technical study to identify opportunities for shared infrastructure and advance toward effective gas integration, with a long-term vision and regional commitment.
