Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) continue to stand out as one of the world’s leading regions for clean electricity generation. In April 2025, total generation reached 158 TWh, a year-on-year increase of 5%, with a renewability index of 70%, surpassing the 69% recorded in 2024. This progress reflects a notable recovery in hydropower and significant growth in wind energy, according to the Monthly LAC Electricity Generation Report prepared by OLACDE.
The region’s electricity mix remains highly diverse, with renewable sources predominating; hydropower and wind energy together account for more than 80% of total output. Hydroelectric generation showed a substantial year-on-year increase thanks to favorable weather conditions, while wind output grew 42% compared with the previous month.
Although solar power’s share saw a slight decline, falling from 6.3% in March to 4.7% in April, this source maintains a share comparable to that of oil and its derivatives, cementing its position as an essential component of the region’s sustainable energy mix.
