As part of the 12th Ecuadorian Congress on Geology, Mining, Oil and Environment (CEGMIPA 2025), the Director of Studies, Projects and Information of the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), Fitzgerald Cantero, took part as a panelist in the sessions dedicated to Ecuador’s energy and environmental future.
During his remarks, Cantero emphasized that Ecuador has a highly renewable energy mix, standing out in hydroelectric generation, but that there is still ample room to develop untapped resources, such as solar, wind and geothermal energy.
“Investing in flexibility, smart grids and regional integration is essential to guarantee energy security and make the most of our resources,” Cantero noted.
The Congress brought together representatives from the public, private and academic sectors as well as international organizations, who analyzed the strategic challenges facing Ecuador’s energy system in the context of the regional energy transition.
