The Executive Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), Andr\u00e9s Rebolledo, presented a strategic and innovative vision for the energy future of Latin America and the Caribbean at the Ekos Sustainability Summit 2025, organized by Revista Ekos in Quito.<\/p>\n
During his remarks, Rebolledo emphasized that green energy represents a unique opportunity to advance toward sustainable development, attract responsible investment, and strengthen regional equity. He noted that in 2024 alone, the region installed 25 GW of new renewable capacity, of which 16 GW came from solar energy and 7 GW from wind energy, cementing Latin America’s leadership in clean power generation worldwide.<\/p>\n
“The energy transition is no longer a promise, it’s a reality already underway,” he stated. He pointed out that sectors such as mobility, heating, industrial production, and air conditioning are being electrified rapidly, forming a fundamental pillar of the decarbonization process. “If we want more electric mobility, we must first secure the supply, and make sure it’s clean,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n
Amid a challenging economic context\u2014with average growth of 0.9% over the past decade\u2014the 1.7% increase in electricity demand reflects a structural transformation underway. “Electrification is advancing in Latin America and the Caribbean faster than economic growth itself,” he affirmed.<\/p>\n
Rebolledo also highlighted the diversity of institutional models in the region’s energy sector. He cited the case of Ecuador, which combines public and private participation, as an example of a mixed model that opens up new opportunities for investment and regional cooperation.<\/p>\n
Finally, he addressed the role of emerging technologies such as offshore wind energy\u2014with progress underway in Colombia and Brazil\u2014and next-generation nuclear power, safer and smaller in scale, which countries like Ecuador are already considering incorporating in the future.<\/p>\n
“The energy transformation is not only a response to climate commitments; it is also a competitiveness necessity. Markets demand goods and services produced with clean energy. That makes us stronger and more attractive,” he concluded.<\/p>\n
