A recent report by the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) highlights that the region has an extensive hydroelectric infrastructure that, on average, is more than 30 years old, presenting a significant opportunity to modernize and optimize these assets, ensuring their efficiency and capacity to adapt to climate change.

The document notes that, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), it will be crucial to substantially increase installed capacity, reaching more than 2,900 GW globally by 2050, which will require adding approximately 46 GW per year. In Latin America, notable projects such as Manseriche in Peru (7,550 MW), Zamora G8 in Ecuador (3,600 MW), and Ituango in Colombia (2,400 MW) demonstrate the region’s potential to contribute to this goal.

However, the challenges are significant. Economic viability and current socio-environmental requirements complicate the development of new projects. The report indicates that, to overcome these difficulties, it is essential to make strategic investments in hydraulic storage technologies and in modernizing existing infrastructure, thereby ensuring the stability and reliability of the electrical grid.

At this critical juncture, Latin America and the Caribbean must consider hydropower as a strategic pillar in the agendas of governments, institutions, and the private sector, promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for coming generations.

Download the technical note at the following link: https://www.OLACDE.org/publicaciones/nota-tecnica-no-7-panorama-de-la-energia-hidroelectrica-en-america-latina-y-el-caribe/

In a global context that demands an energy transition and the decarbonization of the electricity matrix, hydropower stands out as an essential source for Latin America and the Caribbean.
